Shift reconciliation

Shift reconciliation is counting the drawer at the end of a shift and comparing it against what the system expected, so any difference is found the same day rather than at the end of the month.

Also called: cash up · cashing up · drawer reconciliation

The expected figure is simple arithmetic: opening float, plus cash sales, plus any cash added, minus cash paid out for expenses. What the drawer actually holds should match. When it does not, the difference is the thing to look at.

Small differences are normal — a riyal here or there from rounding or a rushed handover. What matters is the pattern. Consistent shortfalls on the same shift or the same person are worth a conversation; random small differences in both directions usually are not.

Reconciling daily rather than weekly is the whole point. A discrepancy found the same evening can be traced to specific transactions and a specific person. The same amount found three weeks later is untraceable and effectively written off.

In Outale this happens as part of closing a shift: the cashier counts, the system compares against expected, flags the discrepancy on the Z-Report, and stores the closed shift in an audit log with name and timestamp.
